Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder in women of child-bearing age. The associated female fertility disorder is one of the main reasons for an unfulfilled wish to have a child. The background of this disease, which usually begins during puberty, is very complex. Therefore, the individual symptoms can vary from woman to woman and there can be very different degrees of severity.
PCOS is diagnosed if at least two of the following criteria are present:
- Ovulation is not frequent enough or does not take place at all (often accompanied by irregularities in the cycle)
- An excess of male hormones (e.g. overweight, increased hairiness, acne, hair loss, excessive pigmentation)
- Multiple cysts (small blisters) on the ovaries
